The typescript of the list of marriages that took place in Wayne County in 1849 was provided to us by the Wayne County Historian's Office to help you better formulate questions when visiting the society or ordering mail searches. We all hope this list provides clues to ancestral location and surnames. We assume many of the couples joined the migration out to Michigan and other points west. If you recognize anyone on this list, please drop a line to Tim so it can be noted next to their listing.
As you scan the listings you'll see unusual spellings. They're not typos we've made but can be attributed to the original typist's interpretation of old handwriting, or assumptions made by the registrars of the births. If a spelling differs from that of your ancestral surname, or births didn't take place in the townships you thought your ancestors were from, don't pass them by. Jot them down...just in case. A date and location can be used to search in the 1850 census or the info may turn out useful to others searching your surnames.
During years 1847 - 1850 some New York State counties officially recorded information about births, marriages and deaths. Then they just stopped. Not all counties preserved this early information so each county must be taken on a case-by-case basis in making inquiries of societies. Required birth registration didn't start in New York State until 1880, over 30 years after the 1847 - 1850 events were recorded, and wasn't really enforced until 1900. New York State death registration wasn't required until just after 1900. Marriage certificates were issued in the 1860s but kept by the couple and written down by the person performing the marriage.

The marriage of Samuel Conine and Caroline Calhoun on March 1 1849 in Lyons is of interest as it seems to be Samuel Canine, born abt 1826 that was married to Catherine Calhoun, born Feb 1832 and resided in York Twp, Washtenaw Co, Michigan from 1860 until their deaths.
According to his death record his parents were Peter and Annie Canine of NY. The 1850 census of Lyons has Samuel Canine (indexed as Carmin), 25; Anna, 55 (his mother?}; Catherine, 18 and Samuel 4/12 all born in NY. Catherine's mother Mary Calhoun resided with them in 1860 census and was born about 1785 in NY. Mary the wife of Herman Calhoon/Calhoun seems to be one and the same individual and a female of the right age to be Catherine resided in the home in 1840 census.
The son Samuel was not in the home in the 1860 census, but Aaron H. was born 04 Jul 1853 in NY. The rest of the children were born in Washtenaw Co, Michigan starting in 1856.

I was so pleased to find records of marriages relating to my family as well the listings of their burials within Wayne Co.
Marriage dated March 7, 1849 Chloe Northup to William J. Blythe. Chloe is my gg aunt.
Marriage dated March 29, 1849 Joseph E. Northup to Charlotte Webb. Joseph is my gg uncle, brother to Chloe.
Marriage dated Dec. 28, 1848 Amasa Atwood to Rachel Dobbs.
Amasa is the Uncle of Chloe & Joseph Northup, through their sister Mary Knowles Northup whom married Alvah J. Atwood, brother to Amasa. All of Ontario Center.
I was also pleased to find my g-grandmother's family and some of their related marriages- 'Closs'- Martha Closs Oct. 15, 1848 and also the burials of the whole family of 'Closs' within Wayne Co.
And last but not least I spotted the response of a 'Sandy' regarding her family 'Tibbets' from Washington Co, NY & of Rhode Island- turns out we are cousins from the Northup-Tibbets line from Rhode Island & Washington Co, NY. Your site has reunited us, after a century of being Lost to eachother. Thank-You so very much for all your postings of Wayne Co. records.

They along with her parents Reuben and Polly Conant and her 2 brothers Reuben and James came to Robinson Township, Ottawa County, Michigan around 1860. Reuben (her brother) is my great grandfather. I have seen listed here several times how these early settlers migrated mostly to Michigan.
