The typescript of the list of births that took place in Wayne County in 1850 was gratiously provided to us by the Wayne County Historian's Office. We hope this list provides clues to ancestral location and helps you better formulate questions when visiting the societies or ordering mail searches. We assume many of the couples and their children joined the migration out to Michigan and other points west. If you recognize anyone on this list, please drop a line to me so it can be noted next to their listing. Be sure to put "Wayne County Births 1850" as the subject line of your email, so that it's not deleted or lost.
As you scan the listings you'll see unusual spellings. They're not typos we've made but can be attributed to the original typist's interpretation of old handwriting, or assumptions made by the registrars of the births. If a spelling differs from that of your ancestral surname, or births didn't take place in the townships you thought your ancestors were from, don't pass them by. Jot them down... just in case. A date and location can be used to search in the 1850 census or the info may turn out useful to others searching your surnames.
During years 1847 - 1850 some New York State counties officially recorded information about births, marriages and deaths. Then they just stopped. Not all counties preserved this early information so each county must be taken on a case-by-case basis in making inquiries of societies. Required birth registration didn't start in New York State until 1880, over 30 years after the 1847 - 1850 events were recorded, and wasn't really enforced until 1900. New York State death registration wasn't required until just after 1900. Marriage certificates were issued in the 1860s but kept by the couple and written down by the person performing the marriage.

On the Rose Birth 1850 site; the ninth name "Charls L. Stewart Mar- Elisha J. & Janes C." is my Grandfather whom I knew as a teen; Charles Loren Stewart. His birth date is February 14, 1850 and he was born in Rose, Wayne Co. and the parents are listed correctly. And, at 90, he hated Valentine's cakes! Thanks for the site! Ruth Barber Simpson

As per your request, here is some information about "Eron N. BYSE - July 1 - Stephen & Mary Ann."
Aaron N. Byce, 4th son of Stephen Byce & Mary Ann Jeffers, grandson of Robert Byce; born 01 Jul 1850 in Rose Twp, Wayne Co, NY, died 14 May 1936 in Harrisville Twp, Alcona Co, Michigan.
His older brother Isaac Byce (Boyce), is mentioned in both "Landmarks of Wayne County" (pg 296) and "Rose Neighborhood Sketches" (pg 176). Isaac married Lany Ream in 1871 and they had two boys, Charles & John, both of whom were born, married and died in Wayne County, but apparently never had any children of their own.
For Aaron Byce, using "HeritageQuest Online" to search the U.S. Censuses - In 1860, "Erin" is found in Riley Twp, St Clair Co, Michigan; Series M653, Roll 559, Pg 36, Line 1. In 1870, "Byse, Eson" is found in Oscoda, Iosco Co, Michigan; M593, 677, 703, Line 3 (his sister is just across the street). In 1880, "Byce, Aaron" is found in Harrisville Twp, Alcona Co, Michigan; T9, 569, 21, Line 47. In 1900, "Byce, Aaron" is found in Harrisville Twp; T623, 698, 41. In 1910, "Byce, Aaron" is found in Harrisville Twp; T624, 634, 45. In 1920, "Byse, Aaron" is found in Harrisville Twp; T625, 753, 41. (Haven't checked the 1930 Census yet).
Aaron married Adeline Simons (c1848-1911) about 1870 and they had 4 daughters; Inez (c1868-1869), Nettie (1872-1887), Ida (1874-1964) and Ethel (1881-1925). Ida married Fred Campell and they had one son, Raymond, who married Frances DeForest. And Ethel married Stephen DeForest (c1879-?) and they had a son, Melvin, and a daughter, Letha.
Of particular interest to us right now is an 1830's Galen census sheet (Series M19, Roll 117, Page 150) in which 6 families appear within 7 lines of one another; there's Francis Byce, John Furgeson, Byce Furgeson, Stephen Furgeson, Samuel Byce and Robert Byce. Among the Byces, it's believed that Francis was Robert's father, and Robert was Samuel's father, although we have no solid documentation to support it. Among the Furgesons (Fergusons), it's been established that John Furgeson (c1765-1840) was the father of both Stephen (1794-1861) and Byce (1801-1881) and that John's wife was named Margaret. In addition, John & Margaret Furgeson had a daughter named Naomi (1797-1837) and another son named Embree (1806-1888), among other children.
In summary, these clues (Byce Furgeson, Embree Furgeson, Naomi Furgeson, the proximity of the families and their respective ages) suggest that John Furgeson's wife was perhaps born "Margaret Buys" and was the sister of "Francis Buys," linking them to the "Buys" families found among the settlers of the Beekman Patent.
Any information regarding these families would be greatly appreciated. See RootsWeb's WorldConnect database "wbyce17" for further information and speculation. Thank you. Sincerely, William J. Byce.
