Letter to Mary Jeffers

Town of Rose
Wayne County, New York

Rose, N.Y. Jany 17th, 1894

Mrs. Mary Jeffers
Rose N.Y.

Dear Madame:

Herewith I send your check on Briggs Nat. Bank Clyde N.Y. for $545.49 as your portion of the Estate of Peleg P. Haviland as determined by the Surrogate yesterday. I also enclose a receipt for you to sign and return to me - also a statement - The tax of $167.47 is a State Tax which I have to pay to the Treasurer of the County and which is the law in this State, that all legacies of over $500 - going to the relatives farther removed than brothers or sisters have to pay a tax of 5% to the State. Trusting that this legacy will prove a blessing to you, and that my execution of the trust given into my hands is Satisfactory to you.

I remain,

Yours very truly

Frank H. Closs

This letter was contributed for posting on the site by a person who thought it might help someone but who desired to remain anonymous. They were not related to the Jeffers' or Closs's and did not want to correspond with anyone. We appreciate all family contributions of this type, and respect a contributor's conditions and desire for privacy. The amount of tax stated is over 5%, so perhaps the lawyer made an error in writing, or the $545.49 was an installment.

I checked the 1880 census on ancestry.com and found a Peleg C. HAVILAND residing in Raisin, Lenawee, MI, age 67, born New York. The same individual was residing there in the 1850 census. Another database on the site has several references to that person as hailing from Saratoga County. But the 1860 census database lists a much younger Peleg Haviland, residing in Rose, Wayne, NY, age 27, born New York, the Peleg Haviland of this estate. The 1880 census database lists both a Mary Jeffers, age 24, wife of "Henery" Jeffers residing in Rose, and a Mary Jeffers, age 24, wife of John Jeffers, residing in Rose. (If one of the many Jeffers researchers who use this site regularly would have information to contribute as to who the legatee was and how related to Mr. Haviland, it would be appreciated by all.) Frank Closs, age 32 in the 1880 census, also resided in Rose. The "Index to the Scrapbook of John Chatterson, Part 2," on this site and contributed by Frank Dennis, and available for viewing at the Rose Historical Society, has a note for an 1893 obit for Peleg Haviland of Rose. Peleg P. Haviland (1831 - 1893) of this estate is listed in Bill Dean's reading of the Rose Cemetery.
