Brief Sketches of the Principal Towns in the Counties Embraced in the Directory.

CLYDE- is village second only to Lyons, in the county of Wayne. It is situate on the Clyde river, the Erie canal running through its southern part. The village is in the township of Galen, so called from being a portion of the military trace assigned to the medical department of the Revolutionary army, as a recompense for its sufferings and sacrifices during the war. At the time of its incorporation, the village was called Lauraville, but changed to Clyde in 1818. The population is about 2,000. There is a large Capital employed in the various kinds of manufacturing here. Glass of excellent quality is made in Clyde. It has also ex tensive distilleries, steam flour mills, steam saw mills, furnaces and shops for the manufacture of agricultural implements, malt houses, a tanner, and other manufactories. Six temples of divine worship adorn the village.

LYONS- Lyons, the capital of Wayne county, is one hundred and ninety-three miles from Albany. It stands on the Erie canal, at the confluence of Canandaigua outlet and Mud Creek, and contains about four thousand inhabitants. It is one of the prettiest villages in the State, being ornamented by a large number of handsome edifices of different descriptions. the court house is a tasteful cut stone edifice, with a fine portico of the Ionic order of architecture, and surmounted by a towering dome. There are seven churches; a union school house; two banks; a great variety of stores; manufactories of different kinds, including a furnace, a machine and agricultural implement s hop, pottery, brewery, fanning mill establishment, &c.

Lyons is one of the oldest towns in Western New York, a settlement having been made on the site of the village as early as 1789.

MACEDON- a canal and railroad village, five miles west of Palmyra, is a thriving place, containing five hundred inhabitants, two churches, grist and saw mills, furnace, machine shop, and other manufactories.

NEWARK- six miles west of Lyons, is a flourishing railroad and canal station, containing about twenty-five hundred inhabitants. It is the centre of an extremely productive agricultural region. The village is a part of the township of Arcadia. It was in the village of Hydesville, in this township, that the notorious Fox family originated. These people gave rise to the "Rochester Rappings," which excited so much curiosity and wonder all over the country.

PALMYRA- Palmyra is twenty-three miles east of Rochester. The town contains upwards of four thousand inhabitants. The population of the village is about twenty-five hundred. It contains five churches, a union school, a bank, and several considerable manufactories. Joseph Smith, the father of the famous Mormon prophet, who was murdered at Nauvoo, in Illinois, some fifteen years ago, settled near this village, in 1819.
