Wayne County Family Biographies

Wealthy Collins

Came across the Wayne County NY Deaths in Sodus 1849 today when doing a "Google" search on Wealthy Collins, who was my gr-gr-great-grandmother.

Information which has come down in my family says that she was born Wealthy Durham, 30 October 1812, in NY State, the 7th of 12 children of Ira & Elizabeth (Brownell) Durham. The Durhams were from Washington Co., NY, and the Brownells from Tiverton, RI. They seem to have met in Montgomery Co., NY.

Wealthy Durham married Charles Joy Collins, son of James & Elizabeth (Davis) Collins, 2 March 1834, in the Village of Joy, Sodus, Wayne Co., NY. They had 5 children: Wealthy Louise, b. 27 Nov. 1834; Ann Eliza, b. 22 Oct. 1837; Ardella, b. 10 Mar. 1839; James Harvey, b. 27 Oct. 1840; and Charles Revilo, b. 20 October 1847. She died 2 June 1849 in Sodus, and is buried there. On 17 Sept. 1851, Charles Joy Collins married Ann Eliza Stoughton, and had 4 more children. Much of the family, including Wealthy (Durham) Collins' parents, moved on to Oakland Co. Michigan. This was probably not long after 1849, because C.J. Collins' 2nd wife was born there, and Elizabeth (Brownell) Durham died there in 1855.

Of course, I believe the designation "U.N." after her name should read "M.N."

What is news to me in your website is that Wealthy Collins died of consumption. That is very interesting, because at least 2 of her grandchildren died of it as well, a half-century later.

I have more information on these families if anyone is interested, and, of course, I am always interested in learning more.

Thank you for making this information available,
