Wayne County, NY

This page is for posting photos of Wayne County residents or photos taken at Wayne County studios that *you'd like to reunite or share with a descendant or will be donating to a historical society*. If you have a Wayne County photo you'd like to post on this page, let us know and tell us what you have and we can discuss file format. Please do not send pictures or other types of files without notice, as I delete all email that I'm not expecting that contain attachments.

ROSE BALTZEL

Found in Ontario County in a box of miscellaneous photos in the summer of 2004, an early 1890s photo of Rose Baltzel, with dates "1865-92" on the back, taken by Dereich photographers, Lyons, N.Y. Rose is listed on our site in the Lyons Rural Cemetery listings, with husband George. Very sad, such a young couple. Either the death date on the back of this photo is wrong or the date on the cemetery listing is wrong, perhaps the husband's and wife's date being reversed.

BALTZEL George W. 1865-1892
BALTZEL Rosa M. wife 1865-1902

If she's related to you, please contact the site coordinators to tell us about her and perhaps clear up the death date. This photo will be donated to the Office of the County Historian.

THE HOELTZEL BROTHERS

Another Ontario County antiques shop junk box find from the winter of 2004-5, a mid-1890s cabinet card photo of "Left to Right - Frederick L. Hoeltzel and Stephen P. Hoeltzel," taken by Richards photographers, Newark, N.Y. Frederick appears to be about 10 years old here.

Older brother Frederick is listed on our site in the Newark Main Street Cemetery, with the parents:

Hoeltzel, Chas. F. 1853-1928
Hoeltzel, Lula V. wife 1859-1938
Hoeltzel, Fred. L. 1885-1909 son C.F. & L.V.

A Frederick Hoeltzel, farmer, is listed on our site in the 1867 Directory of the Town of Arcadia, perhaps a relative. The Stephen Hoeltzel listed in the 1931-32 Directory of Newark NY is probably the younger boy:

HOELTZEL, Stephen, 211 Moore St., salesman; w. Esther M.; Robert L. student. Tel. 152-W.

The SSDI shows a Stephen Hoeltzel, b. 12 Aug 1887, d. Dec 1970, last residence Newark, and wife Esther, and the son Robert from the 1930s directory.

If these young men are related to you, please contact the site coordinators to tell us about them. This photo will be donated to the Office of the County Historian.

MINNIE HOELTZEL

Found with the photo above, a circa 1895-96 cabinet card photo noted on back as being "Minnie R. Hoeltzel, Graduate of Newark High," taken by Richards photographers, Newark, N.Y. This is Minnie in her graduation day finery, holding her rolled diploma.

Minnie is found in the Lyons Rural Cemetery listings, death year not given, with relatives. A comparison of the original photos in "real life" shows various facial characteristics resemblances to each of the boys above. Minnie lived past 1936 as she's listed in our on-line Newark Grange membership list for that year.

HOELTZEL Minnie R. 1878-19
HOELTZEL George 1836-1905, GAR
HOELTZEL Magdalina SCHWAB wife 1846-1902

If Minnie is in your family tree, please contact the site coordinators to tell us about her. This photo will be donated to the Office of the County Historian.

4/16/05   From John Zornow I remember "Aunt Minnie" well. I think that she died in 1958. Minnie was the last of her branch of the family. She taught school at the Mud Mills School #3 in the Town of Arcadia. Lived in the family home nearby on Rt. 88. My great grandmother was Emma Hoeltzel, who died 1885.

CHARLES TIESE, Sr.

Charles Tiese, Sr.'s 1890s cabinet card photo was with the Hoetzel photos, and has the identical handwriting as that on the back of the Hoeltzel Bros.' picture. I can't find this man on line under any spelling variant I've tried so far. I notice there are a lot of Tice's found via our search engine but can't find him. Taken by T.D. Gehring photographers, Lyons, N.Y. "Above the Opera House."

If you know who this man is or can verify his surname, please contact the site coordinators. This photo will be donated to the Office of the County Historian.
