COLLINS A. JENKS

Moss did not grow under this family's feet and I feel they were just passing through Wayne County. Being unable to find the Eugene Jenks family in the ancestry 1900 census database anywhere, I finally searched for anyone with the first name Collins residing in Wayne County. I haven't personally seen this 1900 census sheet but the handwriting must have been difficult to interpret:

1900 United States Federal Census
Home in 1900: Sodus, Wayne, New York

Name: Collins Jenkin
Age: 14
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1886
Birthplace: New York

E V Jenkin 52 [Should be about 42]
Hattie S Jenkin 40

Collins Jenkin 14
Mable Jenkin 12
Gattis Jenkin 10

Collins A. Jenks and family moved away from Wayne County between 1902 and 1910 and he resided in Onondaga County until at least the 1930 census. From ancestry's online census database:

1910 United States Federal Census

Name: Collins A Jenks
Age in 1910: 25
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1885

Hattie S Jenks 51
Collins A Jenks 25

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918

In September 1918, Collins Alex Jenks, farm laborer, b. 10 Feb 1885, resided at RD#1, Clay, Onondaga County, NY, with wife Nina H. Jenks.

Here's another case of poor census-taker handwriting or the transcriber not reading handwriting correctly:

1920 United States Federal Census
Home in 1920: Cicero, Onondaga, New York

Name: Collin A Jenke [Collin A Jenks]
Age: 34 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1886

Household Members:

Harriett Jenks 15

William Jenks 9
Leona Jenks 5

I got a little carried away with this and tried to trace his parents. Check out ancestry.com. Five separate GEDCOMs posted by three researchers (one GEDCOM updated Oct. 25, 2006) contain the family of Eugene N. Jenks, and all have the exact same information, sources not cited. One researcher states that they haven't personally checked every source before uploading the information. Family members' ages are years off from what the various censuses have. Collins Jenks is said to be b. ca 1873, which would have made him about 29 years old when he graduated from Sodus High School in 1902. This doesn't gibe with his age in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses, nor with his own stated birthday on his WWI draft registration. The WWI draft registration images have been available on ancestry for several years now, and are useful for researching men born in the 1880s and 1890s.

In 1920, Collins A. Jenks' mother was residing in Ohio with her daughter Mabel O.:

1920 United States Federal Census
Home in 1920: East Cleveland Ward 2, Cuyahoga, Ohio

Name: Hattie S Jenks
Age: 61 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1859
Birthplace: New York
Relation to Head of House: Mother-in-law
Father's Birth Place: Pennsylvania
Mother's Birth Place: New York
Marital Status: Married
Household Members:
Name Age
Elmer J Leicht 31
Mabel O Leicht 32
Elmer J Leicht 3 2/12
Hattie S Jenks 61

1930 United States Federal Census
Home in 1930: East Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio

Name: Elmer Leicht
Age: 41
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1889
Birthplace: New York
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's name: Mable
Name Age
Elmer Leicht 41
Mable Leicht 40
Elmer Leicht 13

Hattie is no longer residing with them in 1930, and perhaps passed away. Collins' sister Mabel's obituary turned up in a South Caroline obits index:

http://www.infodepot.org/obits/1976/obit76jl.htm
Spartanburg Herald and Herald Journal (South Carolina)
Obituaries, 1976

LEICHT, MABEL JENKS
89, Spartanburg w/o Elmer J. Leicht, Sr.

In 1920, a man who might be Collins' father Eugene was residing in Detroit with a Carpenter family:

1920 United States Federal Census
Home in 1920: Detroit Ward 8, Wayne, Michigan

Name: Eugene Jenks [Eugene Jenps]
Age: 63 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1857
Birthplace: New York
Relation to Head of House: Lodger
Father's Birth Place: New York
Mother's Birth Place: New York
Marital Status: Married

1930 United States Federal Census
Home in 1930: Jackson, Cambria, Pennsylvania

Name: Eugene N Jenks
Age: 73
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1857
Birthplace: New York
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's name: Francis E
Name Age
Eugene N Jenks 73
Francis E Jenks 55
Charles Daughtery 17
Walter C Jone 31
Mildred M Jone 25
Lois M Jone 7
Earl E Jone 2 11/12

And I found lots more, but it was getting away from Wayne County and not solving the question of "Whatever happened to Collins A. Jenks," 1902 graduate of Sodus High School.
