Welcome to the Wayne County NYGenWeb site. Wayne County is in the heart of the beautiful Finger Lakes Region, in the center of New York State. We have the best of all worlds - the historic shores of Lake Ontario, streams and rivers, wetlands and farmlands, apples and wildflowers, cross-country skiing and sandy beaches, lighthouses and historic homes, and picturesque small towns with friendly residents. In the first half of the 19th century many of your ancestors decided to move on west from this paradise, especially to Michigan and Ohio. If your Michigan ancestor was born in "York State", please stay a while and check out our online resources to see if they started their trek from here.
Wayne County NYGenWeb is strong in some areas and need improvement in others. What we have so far has been contributed by the county historian's office and other historians, local residents and online researchers. To grow and keep you all happy and coming back we need more, more, more. Obits, wills, photos showing life in Wayne, Rev. War pension applications, diary excerpts, cemetery lists. Do you have any of these items at home? If you do, please contact any one of the co-coordinators listed above and tell us what you have.
The co-coordinators and editors of this site aren't professional historians and put work on the site as a hobby in our spare time. We wish we could directly help you but can't. Many of your specific questions can be answered by contacting the Wayne County research resources listed in the left-hand menu bar under "Resources" or "Links". If you'd like to have someone help you directly in Wayne County, the county historian's office will conduct your search for a reasonable fee or be able to to give you a referral to a trusted professional familiar with local records.
