The son of Thomas and Phoebe Frye Gage, he was a direct descendant of John Gage born 1394 and Joan Sudgrave born 1398, both born in Sussex, England. John married Margaret Foster on 5 Feb 1761 in New Hampshire. Margaret was born 1742 in Pelham, Hillsborough, NH. From New Hampshire, the family moved to Washington Co., NY, then settled in Wayne County, New York. John and Margaret had the following children: 1. Elizabeth Gage, born 21 Sept. 1761 in Washington Co., NY 2. Jesse B. Gage, born 6 Apr 1764 in Washington Co., NY. Jesse died 22 Aug 1843 in Ontario, Wayne, NY, and is buried in the Cass Farm Cemetery, Ontario, NY. Jesse served in the War of 1812 as a Private in McMahan's Regiment, New York Militia. He married Mercy Grandy, 1787 in Warren Co., NY. Mercy was born 22 May 1763 in Warren Co., NY, and died 5 Jun 1848 in Ontario, Wayne, NY. She is also buried in the Cass Farm Cemetery, Ontario, Wayne, NY. Jesse and Mercy had the following children:
i. Sophia Gage born 1787 Jesse and Mercy's youngest sons Jason and Jonathan are listed in the Gazetteer and Business Directory of Wayne County, N.Y. 1867: John Gage, eldest son of Jesse and Mercy, was born 17 May 1789 and died after 1860 in Ontario, Wayne County, NY. John married Abigail (?) about 1816, and in 1823 they had son John Gage. Jesse B. Jr. Gage, son of Jesse and Mercy, was born 10 Aug 1797 in Johnsburg, Washington County, NY. Jesse married Unknown and had: i. Eliza Gage, born 1817, died 14 Apr 1862, and buried in Ontario Village Cemetery, Ontario, NY. ii. Jesse B. Gage the 3rd, born in 1819. Jesse lived in Williamson in 1860. He served New York State in the Civil War, enlisting at age 43 on 31 July 1862, at Onondaga, NY,in Co. B 9th NY Heavy Artillery. Jesse B. III was mustered out as a Private at Washington, DC on 12 August 1865. Hosea Gage, another son of Jesse and Mercy, was born 4 Mar 1802 in Johnsburg, Washington County, NY. Hosea first married Jane Bennett, and had a son Hosea W. Gage, born in 1825. Jane died before 1833 in Wayne County, NY. He married second Electa Ann Hodges, born 1809 in Onondaga, NY. They had a son, William Gage, born in 1834. Hosea W. Gage, half-brother of William, and son of Hosea and Jane, was born 1825, died 1875, and is buried in Ontario, Wayne County, New York. Hosea W. married Sarah J., who was born 1828 and died 1896 in Ontario, Wayne, New York. Hosea W. and Sarah J. had two daughters, Josephine and Albina Gage. William Gage, son of Hosea and Electa, was born 1834 in Wayne County, NY. Married to Mary Kern, born 1837 in PA, William died after 1882 in Indiana. William and Electa had son John Elmer Gage. John Gage, son of John and Abigail, was born 1823. He first married Louisa Phillips and they had the following children: i. John Gage, born about 1843 in Wayne County, NY. Orlando A. Gage, son of John and Louisa, was born 1850, died 1933, and is buried in Furnaceville Cemetery, Ontario, Wayne County, NY. Orlando married Bell B., who was born 1849, died 1921, and is also buried in Furnaceville Cemetery, Ontario, Wayne County, NY. Orlando and Bell had a daughter, Louisa P. Gage, who was born 1874, died 1885 in Ontario, Wayne County, NY, and is buried in Ontario, Wayne County, NY. John Gage married second Mary Elizabeth Whitcomb, b. 1855, the daughter of Charles A. Whitcomb & Lucy Ann Thompson. John and Mary Elizabeth had the following children:
i. Charles Edmund Gage, born 30 Apr 1876. Charles Edmund Gage, son of John and Mary Elizabeth, was born 30 Apr 1876 in Ontario, Wayne County, NY, died 6 Oct 1947 in Ontario, Wayne, NY, and is buried in Furnaceville Cemetery, Ontario, Wayne County, NY. Charles served in the U.S. Army in World War I, in the American Expeditionary Forces in France. He was Sgt. 1st Class, 306 Field Sig. Bn., 81st Div. with Gen. John J. Pershing. Charles married Augusta Mallison, daughter of Scott W. Mallison & Ella Atwater, on 24 Dec 1896 in Ontario, Wayne County, NY. Augusta was born 22 Apr 1877 in Batavia, New York, died 26 Nov 1944, and is buried in Ontario, Wayne County, NY. Charles and Augusta had the following children:
i. John Clayton Gage, born 10 Oct 1897 in Ontario, Wayne County, NY. John Clayton died 19 Mar 1899 in Ontario, Wayne County, NY, and is buried in Ontario, Wayne County, NY. Bessie Mae Gage, daughter of Charles Edmund and Augusta, was born 6 Aug 1901 in Ontario, Wayne County, New York, died 10 Apr 1974 in Irondequoit, Monroe County, New York, and is buried in Furnaceville Cemetery, Ontario, Wayne County, NY. Bessie Mae first married Joseph W. Newton, 29 Sep 1917 in Rochester, Monroe, NY. They had the following children:
i. Joseph Newton, born 19 Oct 1919, died 11 Sep 1994 in Rochester, Monroe, NY. Bessie divorced and married second about 1927 to Harlow Edward Gould, son of Charles Harry Gould & Mary Ann Patterson.
