The area now comprising the Town of Palmyra was part of Ontario County in
1800. Historians familiar with an area can make "educated guesses" as to what part of a mother county is included in another county in later censuses. There are several methods that assist researchers in determining this, such as early deed research, analyzing 19th century maps showing properties that were passed on in families, locations of old family cemeteries, reading old highway records, or just being familiar with a geographic area and its residents. A "run" of names on an early census may also appear in later censuses.
We don't know who abstracted this particular list from the original census. For further information about persons listed or to see the original typescript of the list presented here, please contact the Office of the County Historian. Copies of the 1800 New York State census microfilm are available at branches of the National Archives, for rental at LDS Family History Centers around the world, and at many libraries and historical societies across the US.
